Algar History

In 1964 Al Garthwaite, an amateur sports car racer and Italian sports car aficionado, retired from Lee Tire and Rubber Company, and founded Algar Ferrari at the Derham Custom Body Company, renowned for building custom motor coaches for the wealthy since 1887.

In 1972 Al Garthwaite and Luigi Chinetti formed a partnership to become the importer for Ferrari for the entire eastern half of the United Sates.
In 1995 Garthwaite passed the dealership to Bob Segal, a young enthusiastic owner who brought racing to Algar with the Ferrari Challenge Series and sponsorship of Ferrari Club of America track events.

Before passing the torch to a new owner, the Segals completed a 3 year, $7 million renovation of the 33,000 square foot dealership in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania providing a new world-class Ferrari facility in Philadelphia. The facility was christened at the unveiling of the 2012 Ferrari FF and Grand Opening on November 10, 2011.

Jack Clarke, VP of Sales at Ferrari North America said, “The entire Algar team has done a phenomenal job creating one of the finest showroom and auto service facilities in the world. We are proud to unveil the Ferrari FF to the Philadelphia market here at Algar.”

In April of 2012, Bob Segal sold the dealership to Aleks, a young businessman who guided the dealership into the future.

Flash forward to December 2021, RDS Automotive Group, the premier luxury and exotics dealership group owned by Robert DiStanislao, extended its proven reputation for superior
service in the Philadelphia market, with its acquisition of  Algar Ferrari of Philadelphia.

The location, which has been renamed to Ferrari Philadelphia, is the first Ferrari dealership operated by RDS Automotive Group and the eleventh dealership added to the company's collection of luxury retail stores. "It only makes sense to add Ferrari to our stable of premium brands" said Mr. DiStanislao.
