The Cortile Cup: An Overview and history

The Cortile Cup is a judged event that takes place on Saturday of the Schenley Park race weekend. Each owner that registers and attends the Cortile Della Corsa is automatically entered into the Cortile Cup to be judged. The format used for judging the Cortile Cup is a "relaxed" form of judging developed to enhance the experience and atmosphere for our participants while not adding drama. There are nine awards presented for the best examples of each marque and a master award for the "best in show" deeming that particular car "The Cortile Cup Winner" of the year. Each car is judged on the visual impact they make, or the "wow factor," while criteria such as the car’s condition, authenticity, restoration, rarity, and historical importance are also considered. The Cortile Cup has been a part of the Cortile Della Corsa ever since it was introduced in 2011. In 2021 the Cortile adopted the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix's French car show and has opened The Cortile Cup to our French guests.

Inspiration for The Cup was drawn from two noteworthy macchina, the 1939 Alfa Romeo Tipo 256 and the 1956 Lancia Aurelia B24s, after they attended the 2009 Cortile Della Corsa. Founded in 2011 by Wayne Long at the suggestion of Steve Barney, a Senior Judge at the Hilton Head Concours, an award for "the best Italian car" at the Cortile Della Corsa should be awarded during the Saturday car show. A few years later in 2011, the inception of the Cortile Cup was hosted and sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Sports Cars awarding the most significant Italian car on display from Saturday's viewing. In 2022 Maserati of Pittsburgh will host the Cortile Cup.

In addition to Cortile Cup Winner award, awards will be given for the "best in class" for the following marques:
  • Alfa Romeo
  • Ferrari
  • Fiat
  • Lancia
  • Lamborghini
  • Maserati
  • Italian specialty car
  • Best French Car
  • Wayne Long Award
All owners must be present with their car during judging!
Winners will be announced at NOON on Saturday during lunch in the clubhouse!

Winner must be present!

*Information regarding judging and the Winner's Circle will be provided at the reception tent upon arrival.

rules and methodology

Our judges rate the cars on the visual impact they make, or the "wow factor." Other criteria such as the car’s condition, authenticity, restoration, rarity, and historical importance are also considered when judging. The main factors are the car’s style, beauty and elegance. There is no such thing as the perfect car, so  judges form an opinion of the car they feel is the best at the show on that particular day based on a set of criteria. The French term Concours d’Elegance means “competition of elegance.”  Cortile judging is a "relaxed" form of judging developed to  enhance the experience for the participants yet not add drama.
